Offering instruction in:

Guitar, Bass, Drums, Ukulele, and Composition/Production

I have been teaching music for 14 years, and have taught all ages and experience levels in individual and group settings. I take a student-centered approach, and enjoy getting to know each person’s musical interests and personal goals. Whether you’re a total beginner (of any age!), or are looking to build on existing skills to pursue music in a new way, you can expect some combination of fundamentals, technique, song learning (with an emphasis on the music you love), theory, ear training, improvisation and composition. I also enjoy focusing more in-depth on writing, arranging and production for students looking to deepen their personal creative practice. Past students have gone on to study music in college, play professionally, and perform and release their own music, though I’m just as excited to work with people who enjoy learning and playing for its own sake.

A little about me: I began playing guitar at the age of 12, and quickly took on drums, bass and piano simultaneously. As soon as I knew a few chords I started forming bands and making albums, and I have been making music ever since. I was encouraged from the beginning by wonderful teachers, friends and family to create and perform, and I bring this same supportive attitude to my students. My hope is that everyone learn to express themselves to the fullest during all stages of their musical journey, and find joy in whatever form of music making they pursue.

I’ve been involved in music in many different ways over the years, writing, performing and recording with my own groups (Eric and Erica, The Light Switches, Silian Rail), and in support of other artists (Sean Hayes, May Erlewine, Woman Believer, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down, From Monument to Masses). I also make music for film and television, and have written and performed for dance and musical theater. I delight in making music in as many forms as possible, and enjoy bringing that breadth of experience and open minded approach to my students.

Feedback from current and former students:

“I’ve said this before, but it’s worth saying again, my kids absolutely ADORE their current guitar teacher, Mr. Eric Kuhn. I can’t thank him enough- since they began working with him there has been a DRAMATIC change in their attitude toward their lessons and their daily practice. They feel comfortable “making mistakes” while learning in front of him, they talk about his patience and calm personality, I don’t exactly know what he’s doing differently, but it’s working!”

— Parent of 11 and 13 year old guitar students

“Eric is a gifted musician and amazing teacher. He taught my son drums starting at age five. Eric was always patient, kind, and encouraging. The lessons were always just the right level and, most important, fun. My son is 15 now and continues to advance as a drummer and musician thanks to teachers like Eric that create a positive, no-pressure experience for students.”
